Bob was inspired and motivated to protect the constitutional rights of others, so he attended law school.  He graduated with honors, receiving the American Jurisprudence Award in Constitutional Law, and he practiced criminal law for several years as a public defender in Colorado and California.  Bob tried many serious criminal cases to verdict, he lectured on criminal defense and trial practice, and he was recognized for his success and dedication as a public defender.  Bob then joined a large, well-known civil law firm in Santa Barbara where, as a litigation partner for 20 years, he specialized in commercial and personal injury litigation.  He tried many cases to verdict, and he found particular satisfaction in obtaining just compensation for the victims of negligence and other wrongdoing.

In 2005 Bob opened Patterson Law to specialize in personal injury and wrongful death litigation.  Since then, he has recovered more than $20 million dollars for his clients.

Bob is a member of the California State Bar, the Santa Barbara County Bar Association, and the California Association of Consumer Attorneys.  He has received an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell which signifies the “highest level of professional excellence and ethical standards.”  Bob has been active in the Bar Association, lecturing at the annual Bench & Bar Conference and serving as Chair of the Committee for Judicial Nominees Evaluation which reports to the Governor regarding local judicial candidates.

Bob is active in community projects and youth sports.  He was president of the Santa Barbara Volleyball Club for many years, providing young women with an opportunity to compete in organized volleyball, and he chaired a joint committee to acquire the Santa Barbara National Guard Armory on behalf of the City of Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Unified School District.  The Armory gym is now utilized as a sports facility for girls’ volleyball.

Bob graduated from USC with a B.A. in communications, and he received his J.D. from the U.C. Berkeley School of Law (“Berkeley Law”).
